“I believe regular yoga practice has the ability to benefit all bodies and minds regardless of age, fitness, disability or injury.”
"More than anything, yoga has helped me be more present in my life, staying adaptable to it's changes and challenges."
Yoga Teacher and Occupational Therapist
Amy Hewer
Amy is a Yoga Teacher and Occupational Therapist based in Brisbane, Australia. Her passion is helping people on their journey to a connected body, mind and life experience.
A highly experienced Occupational Therapist (OT), Amy has an innate understanding of anatomy and physiology. As an OT she specialises in neurological conditions but works with a diverse client group facing physical, cognitive, mental and age related conditions. This informs her ability to use yoga to assist people with functional challenges resulting from injury or chronic health issues.
Amy’s yoga practice began almost 15 years ago but deepened when she experienced the profound effect that daily yoga and meditation was having on her life. She says, ‘‘I was more present in my everyday life and felt stronger mentally and physically.’ Amy reached another turning point when she faced a serious musculoskeletal injury that left her with chronic pain. It was her grounding in yoga, meditation and breath-work that enabled her to re-connect with her body and manage the challenges of her condition. More recently, yoga has been a part of her journey into motherhood; helping to navigate the changes in her body and sense of self.
Amy’s belief in the power of yoga to effect the way we approach our lives is what drew her to teaching and to start Yoga for Living. Her technique is grounded in the Iyengar tradition, also drawing on Hatha, Vinyasa and Yin Yoga; with a focus on alignment, and the use of props to deepen, modify and develop understanding of the body and it's capability. Amy has experience teaching people with a wide range of abilities and conditions; injuries, health conditions, pregnancy (prenatal and postnatal). Through Yoga for Living she teaches private and small group yoga classes. She is also available to cover studio classes in Brisbane.
Amy has a Bachelor of Science (Occupational Therapy). As a yoga teacher she is certified through the Yoga & Integrative Medicine Institute (YIMI) and is a member of Yoga Australia. She completed her 200 hour training at YIMI under expert guidance from teachers Celia Roberts, Swami Muktibodhananda, Jamie Denham, Samantha Lindsay-German amongst others.
